This position was preceded by a tenure at the Polaroid Corporation as a senior scientist and research group leader in the Department of Media Systems Research and Department of Physical Chemistry. His initial assignment at Polaroid began in 1985 in the business development and manufacture of amorphous silicon solar cells. This experience followed service on the faculties of Amherst and Mt. Holyoke Colleges, with a concurrent appointment on the graduate faculty of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Spitler was a postdoctoral student at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin with Heinz Gerischer. His doctoral work was completed under the supervision of Melvin Calvin.
Dr. Spitler has over three dozen journal articles and patents. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Electrochemical Society, and the Bunsengesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie. His research background includes photoelectrochemistry and semiconductor electrochemistry, spectral sensitization of solids, and sensors for detection of hazardous materials.
