Dr. Stack joined the staff of Glycomed, Inc. in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989 as the head of a small "exploratory/discovery" research group that centered on developing carbohydrates as pharmaceuticals. Subsequently, he held a number of positions with other Bay Area biotechnology firms, where he acquired expertise in genomics (microarrays, DNA sequencing) and microfluidics, along with additional scientific and project management experience.

Following three years of postdoctoral work at Davis in the Department of Bacteriology with Bob Hungate investigating the anaerobic bacterial catabolism of cellulose, Dr. Stack joined the Fermentation Biochemistry unit at the USDA/ARS laboratory in Peoria, IL. There he elucidated the structures of a number of newly-discovered sugars thus far unique to anaerobic bacteria.

Dr. Stack has over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and patents, including a set of patents that served as the underlying technology platform for a start-up carbohydrate bioanalytics firm.
