On May 12th US Department of Energy Under Secretary Dr. Steve Koonin visited Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC for National Lab Day. Roosevelt HS hosted a bridge building competition where students designed and built small scale bridges which then competed to see how much weight each bridge could support. Dr. Koonin visited with the students to witness the competition, meet with the students and faculty and then spend time chatting with the students and answering their questions. Dr. Koonin shared his experience as a young science student and gave some personal anecdotes and advice to the aspiring scientists.
National Lab Day is a nationwide initiative to build local communities of support that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students and educators. Dr. Steven E. Koonin is the second Under Secretary for Science in the US Department of Energy. He received his B.S. in Physics from Caltech in 1972 and received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1975. He received the E. O. Lawrence Award from the Department of Energy in 1998.
