President Kennedy's AEC Briefings

AEC Headquarters

President Kennedy and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in the lobby of the AEC headquarters building in Germantown MD following briefings on Thursday, February 16, 1961.  To the right of President John F. Kennedy are:  Brigadier General Chester V. Clifton, Jr. (hat), AEC General Manager Major General Alvin R. Luedecke (grey overcoat), AEC Chairman-Designate Glenn T. Seaborg, Acting AEC Chairman John S. Graham, AEC Commissioner Loren K. Olson, and AEC Commissioner Robert E. Wilson.  The identities of the AEC employees (no overcoats, wearing badges) are unknown.

An Associated Press (AP) photographer captured an almost identical image about one second after the above photograph was taken from a vantage point slightly to the left of this camera.  The AP photograph captured a third AEC employee behind the reception desk and its right edge was at Dr. Seaborg's left shoulder.  The AP photograph appeared on the front page of the Washington Post the next morning (Friday, February 17, 1961) with the following caption:

Surprise Visitor

President Kennedy walks past the reception desk and three apparently surprised employees of the Atomic Energy Commission headquarters at Germantown in upper Montgomery County, Md., during an unannounced, three-hour visit there yesterday.  At right is AEC Chairman Glenn T. Seaborg.
