Energy Sciences Network (ESnet)

2009 Excellence Gov Award Winner

The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet 4) is an Excellence.Gov Award winner for enhancing government transparency. The winners were announced in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 2009 and ESnet 4 won in the category of "application of technology". ESnet is a highly- reliable, high-speed network serving thousands of DOE scientists and collaborators worldwide, funded by the DOE Office of Science to support the agency’s mission to further energy and climate research. Consisting of multiple 10-gigabit lines, ESnet4 can quickly move massive datasets produced by the large-scale science experiments of the Office of Science. Managed and operated by the ESnet staff at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, ESnet provides high bandwidth network connections to all major DOE sites and, via comprehensive connections to the world’s R&E networks, to essentially all U.S. and international R&E institutions. As such, ESnet is one of the most widely based and successful cooperative research efforts within the U.S. federal government.

The Excellence.Gov Awards Program was established by the American Council for Technology/Industry Advisory Council to recognize best practices in the federal government's management and use of information technology.
